One of the highlights of my professional speaking career was as the keynote speaker at the United Nations World NGO Conference in Hamburg, Germany. With well over a hundred countries represented, I needed to deliver a message that would ring loud and clear in every language and every culture. Based on my firm conviction that the same God who made me, made you too, in every color, country and socioeconomic condition, and believing that we should stop talking about cultural diversity and start focusing on cultural commonality, formulating my universal message for my United Nations speech became clear.
I realized then that this message should be part of every speech because it addresses the fundamental governing law of the universe – service – that truly applies to everybody, in every aspect of our lives and job description.
Later, I conducted a leadership/personal development retreat for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. I talked to them about how fortunate they were to be the best-known cheerleaders on the planet. So what were they going to do with this highly visible platform to make a difference, not just a living? I reminded them that they had an opportunity to turn their success into significance by volunteering in the community, raising awareness about critical issues, visiting hospitalized children, and being role models everywhere they went.
To inspire them and illustrate the impact all of us can have when we focus on service before self, I shared the three examples I delivered in my NGO Congress speech.
- For 75 years, Alcoholics Anonymous has taught the secret to mental and physical health, wealth, enduring happiness, and achieving the level beyond success. It’s found in the 12-Step Program, which has helped millions free themselves from addictions, get on the road to recovery, and stay on the journey of significance. Beginning with Step 1, admitting you have a problem, participants embrace one step at a time until they’ve experienced the healing power in each step.
However, everyone who is involved in AA knows that even if they learn and follow the first eleven steps, unless they fully embrace the twelfth step, they will start drinking again. The only way to beat their addiction and truly heal from this disease is through Step 12: help another addict overcome addiction, and volunteer in the community.
Bottom line: To recover from any hard thing, broken dream, loss of a loved one, or addiction, realize that what goes around comes around and that, through service, both the giver’s and receiver’s lives are transformed for good.
- Organizations are measured by their large purpose, through cause marketing. Cause marketing is the proven formula for attracting and retaining quality employees and maintaining high morale, deepening relationships between employers and employees.
Cone/Roper released a five-year study revealing the power of cause marketing:
- Corporate responsibility and citizenship remain highly valued by Americans. Incorporating business practices in support of a cause helps demonstrate a company’s commitment and enhances its credibility.
- Eight in ten Americans have a more positive image of companies that support a cause they care about.
- Nearly two-thirds of Americans agree that cause programs should be a standard business practice.
- More than 60 percent of consumers will switch retailers if they support the cause the consumer supports.
- Nine in ten workers feel a greater sense of pride and stronger sense of loyalty to companies with cause programs, translating into enhanced customer service and positive word of mouth.
- More than half of employees wish their employers would do more to support social causes.
- Eighty-seven percent of employees of companies with cause programs wish their companies would measure success in social as well as financial terms.
- Love is not the answer; it’s the assignment! However, once you demonstrate your love to your most significant others, the highest law of loving is to feel genuinely needed.
In the 1980s I was the main speaker in First Lady Nancy Reagan’s nationwide Just Say No positive-choices school program. While speaking to millions of teenagers in high schools in all fifty states, I became deeply involved in the suicide epidemic that was sweeping across North America, and conducted special programs to help communities in nine states deal with suicides.
Plano, Texas, saw six suicides in one day, seven in one week. In Iowa, one hundred suicide attempts took place within thirty days at one high school; one girl died. Charlotte Ross, a national consultant on suicide, and I talked to families, counselors, school administrators, and health-care professionals, and interviewed each of the students who had attempted suicide.
The students all explained that they wanted to give up on themselves and on life because they lacked committed relationships. I believe that love is a commitment. However, “I love you” is not the most powerful commitment. The most powerful words are “I need you.”
These students told Ms. Ross and me that they knew they were liked and loved, but they didn’t believe they were needed. When we don’t feel that we are needed, why hang around?
To illustrate, one of my friends got married. He asked me to write a song and sing it at his wedding. I said no. He reminded me of our friendship and that it would be cool for me to participate in his special day. He made me feel important.
Everyone likes to feel important. I gave in and wrote the song. Later, my friend phoned to explain that the band had canceled, and he wanted me to prepare forty to fifty songs to play as the dinner entertainment. I said no. He countered with, “I need you.” Had he said, “I love you,” I would have responded, “I love you too; here is the number of a band.” I didn’t want to sing all night. I wanted to eat and socialize like everybody else.
But his needing me made me realize that I was good for something, that I really mattered and could make a significant contribution. I couldn’t turn him down. At the wedding reception, I sang the song that I had written. But before I could sing another tune, the band arrived; there had been a miscommunication.
When I arrived at the reception, my friend needed me, and I would have waited tables, mopped the floor, and contributed in any way I could because I was needed. But when the band arrived, I was no longer needed. We can fool others, but we can’t fool ourselves. So I left the reception and went home. Are you needed? If not, why not? What are you going to do about it?
In the corporate arena, when a sales champion or outstanding executive leaves to work for the competition, it’s usually not about money. There’s a good chance that person no longer feels needed, so he goes where he does feel needed. Outside attention and recognition don’t really motivate us, yet we emphasize them in our marriages, personal relationships, business contracts, and athletic endeavors. What we desperately desire is to be genuinely needed.
We can’t afford to wait for someone to tell us or show us that we are needed. It may never happen. We could go for months without this crucial validation. So what do we do, quit, kill ourselves? Most definitely not.
Why do we think that society has to give our lives meaning, purpose, and excitement? We bear responsibility to prove to ourselves that we are needed. If you don’t feel needed at work, participate more, volunteer, and get involved on committees and event-planning boards. If you don’t feel needed at home, participate more, get involved. If you don’t feel needed by your children, participate more, get involved in their world, volunteer in their schools, host their parties at your home, stay in touch, get involved in their friends’ lives. If you don’t feel needed in your neighborhood, vote, participate in nonprofits, give more than you take, and leave everything and everyone in better shape than you found them.
