Sustained Momentum Begins With A Simple Equation – Master It!

Chip Higgins

Chip Higgins

For over four decades, Chip Higgins has dedicated his career to empowering small business owners to transform vision into reality. With a deep foundation in banking and economics—from his earliest days in Winston-Salem to executive leadership in three regional banks—Chip’s business banking strategies consistently earned each institution national “best brand” recognition by Greenwich Associates. Yet, his true focus has always been serving entrepreneurs directly, recognizing the vital role they play in shaping communities and driving economic progress. Chip is the author of The Bizzics Way: Powering Your Small Business to Maximum Momentum, a guidebook built on the profound idea that momentum isn’t just a business buzzword—it’s a universal law that shapes lasting success at every level. Through his Bizzics coaching practice, founded in 2019 and now further enriched by his book, Chip demystifies business and leadership for entrepreneurs, offering both practical tools and encouragement for the journey. What fuels Chip’s work is his conviction that every business owner deserves access to resources, coaching, and a champion in their corner. He shows that with the right guidance and the power of momentum, even the boldest entrepreneurial dreams can make the world a better place—one energized step at a time.

The Interview Summary

In this episode of The Nonprofit Exchange, I had the pleasure of speaking with Chip Higgins, a business strategist and performance coach. We delved into the concept of sustained momentum, which Chip describes through a simple yet powerful equation: mass times velocity. He emphasizes that understanding this equation can help nonprofit leaders create clarity, discipline, and effective systems to drive their organizations forward.

Chip shared insights from his book, “The Physics Way: Powering Your Small Business to Maximum Momentum,” where he applies principles of physics to the world of business and nonprofits. He highlighted the importance of having clear goals and a well-articulated mission, as these elements provide the necessary direction and energy for organizations to thrive. We discussed how clarity can prevent mission creep and ensure that everyone involved is aligned with the organization’s objectives.

Throughout our conversation, Chip pointed out common barriers to momentum, particularly in the nonprofit sector, such as leadership transitions and the challenges of maintaining energy and focus over time. He stressed the significance of consistency and discipline, advocating for a steady, intentional approach to growth rather than seeking rapid, unsustainable success.

For those interested in exploring these concepts further, Chip offers a free chapter of his book and a diagnostic quiz on his website, chiphiggins.com. This episode is packed with valuable insights for nonprofit leaders looking to enhance their impact and drive sustained momentum in their organizations.

Hugh Ballou

Hey, this is Hugh Ballou. Welcome to the Nonprofit Exchange. We’ve got a great guest today, great topic. The topic is sustained momentum begins with a simple equation. Master it. My guest is Chip Higgins. He’s a business strategist and performance coach focused on helping leaders create sustained momentum through clarity, discipline, and simple, repeatable systems. This is my stuff. I love this. His work emphasizes practical execution over complexity, guiding entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders to align their actions with measurable outcomes. Through his teaching, Chip demonstrates how consistent focus on the right inputs can generate long-term growth, impact, and organizational success. So, Chip, welcome to the Nonprofit Exchange, despite my tripping over my mouth today.

Chip Higgins

You know, it’s contagious, Hugh. I’ll do the same, probably.

Hugh Ballou

You will. So talk about this simple equation that you refer to for sustained momentum, and why is it so powerful for leaders?

Chip Higgins

I’m a big believer in the universal things. I think that at least for now, we’re in a world that we understand and a lot of things have been tested to be proven to be true.

Hugh Ballou

Get the principle down. That’s a soundbite.

Chip Higgins

Well, I think the goals are part of the momentum. I think fundamentally, with momentum, it’s mass times velocity.

Hugh Ballou

Great, great stuff today.

Chip Higgins

No, it’s been my pleasure. Thank you for having me, Hugh.

Hugh Ballou

Thank you so much.
